LitTalk: Identity in Fiction

Alex Temblador, author of the award-winning Secrets of the Casa Rosada, will moderate a panel that includes Julie Murphy, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the young adult novels Dumplin’ (now a film on Netflix), Puddin’, Ramona Blue, and Dear Sweet Pea (her debut middle grade novel); Hafsah Faizal, New York Times bestselling author of We Hunt The Flame; and Sanderia Faye, Hurston/Wright Legacy Award winning author of Mourner’s Bench.

Readers fall in love with books, characters, and stories that they can relate to. Whether it's how a character looks, their culture, sexual orientation, gender, religion, or abilities, sometimes we just need to see ourselves in the books that we read. In our second LitTalk panel, Exploring Identity in Fiction, our panelists will discuss the role of identity in fiction and how they crafted their memorable characters. Topics of conversation will include:

  • How to write realistic characters of diverse identities

  • Using personal experiences to craft characters, culture, and personality

  • The importance of diversity in fiction

  • Character growth in relation to identity

  • The state of diversity in the publishing world

  • Writing characters with identities other than one's own

  • Stereotypes and identity

Each panelist on the Exploring Identity in Fiction panel will suggest their favorite books on writing and publishing. These books, as well as their own novels, will be available for sale and signing.

LitTalk at Interabang is a quarterly panel series led by Writing Workshops Dallas and hosted by Interabang Books. Each panel session will be led by a moderator and feature three to four published authors who reside in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. LitTalk panelists will discuss a variety of subjects on writing, publishing, and the book industry, and will take questions from the audience. Author's books will be for sale at each event. LitTalk at Interabang hopes to inform and inspire the DFW writing community and showcase the phenomenal talent and pool of published authors in the area.
