#OwnVoices: Finding a Literary Agent & Publisher

  • The Drawing Board 1900 Jay Ell Dr Richardson, TX 75081 (map)

In 2015, Lee & Low Books launched a study to determine how diverse the publishing world is and discovered that 80 percent of people who work in publishing identified as white. While writers of color have more opportunity than ever to see their work in print, studies such as this can be disheartening and begs the question: are there literary agents and publishers who want to represent the work of diverse authors? The answer: Yes!

In this seminar, writers of color will be provided the tools and insight on how to find the right literary agent and publisher for them. There is a movement among publishers and literary agents to find diverse voices and with the right knowledge, you can find fantastic representation and a publisher so that your story is shared with readers. Some topics covered in this seminar will include:

  • How to find agents and publishers who want diverse authors and stories

  • How to utilize social media hashtags to find diverse representation

  • Prepare writers on how to handle resistance to diverse stories

  • How to query literary agents and publishers and highlight your diverse background

  • Identify organizations and websites committed to writers of color

  • Discuss indie presses versus large publishers
